Through light and shadow
This series of paintings is profoundly shaped by my Dad’s journey with Alzheimer’s.
It draws upon memories of our daily walks — the vivid yellow of gorse in bloom and the shifting play of light and shadow along the paths we followed. These transitions between brightness and shade became symbolic of his alternating moments of clarity and confusion.
Through this body of work, I aim to convey the restorative power of the natural world — something I often saw reflected in my father’s face — as well as the movement between light and shade that mirrors the shifting journey of Alzheimer’s.

Original painting in oil and cold wax on a cradled wood panel.
Follow a dappled pathway, into the sunlight where the yellow of the gorse just shines.
I have mixed cold wax into the oil paint to bring in more texture and used a variety of tools to create different and interesting marks. The cool blues and purples of the shadows enable the yellows and oranges to radiate and fill you with joy as well as a sense of calm.
UV varnished.
Order framed or unframed.
Unframed is 22.5cm × 30cm. £200. The sides are painted dark aubergine.
Framed is 25.5cm x 33.5cm. £235 in a hand painted grey/green tray frame. It will come ready to hang, strung and screwed in place.

Follow a pathway, in and out of the sunlight, to where the trees grow closer and the shadows grower darker.
I have mixed cold wax into the oil paint to bring in more texture and used a variety of tools to create different and interesting marks. The cool blues and purples of the shadows enable the yellows and lime greens to shine more brightly, restoring a feeling of hope and calmness.

The gorse along this dappled pathway was a sight to behold. The yellow was so dazzling in the sunshine and could restore anyone’s low spirits.
