Held by the Horizon
Held by the Horizon developed from my earlier Calm Reflections series, growing from a desire to explore horizontal layering in greater depth while continuing to investigate the relationship between nature, emotion, and mental wellbeing.
Staring out to sea, I find myself held by the horizon — a place that evokes calm, quiet joy, and a deep sense of emotional balance. Within these paintings, the horizon becomes an emotional anchor, while the repeated horizontal layers in both the clouds and reflected light echo the restorative stillness and rhythm of the natural world.
In this series, I moved from acrylic into oil paint mixed with cold wax, allowing me to build richer surfaces and varied textures through the use of palette knives, silicone spreaders, and other mark-making tools. While the materiality of the work has evolved, my intention remains the same: to explore the sense of wellbeing, reflection, and renewal that the horizon line and layered landscape continue to offer me.

Where Light Rests reflects a quiet moment at the meeting place of sea and sky, where light lingers gently on the horizon before fading into the distance. Layers of luminous cobalt blue, soft turquoise, muted violet, and pale ochre create a sense of depth and tranquillity, while subtle shifts in tone evoke the ever-changing nature of reflected light on water. With the calm horizontal bands and expansive composition I aim to invite a feeling of stillness, offering a space for reflection, balance, and renewal. Through its serene palette and atmospheric quality, I explore the restorative comfort found in simply pausing and looking outward.

With this painting ‘Drift of Light ‘ I aim to capture the gentle movement of light as it drifts across sea and sky, illuminating the landscape with subtle shifts of colour and atmosphere. Layers of soft blue, pale turquoise, muted lavender, blush pink, and hints of warm ochre create a sense of depth and quiet luminosity, while the horizontal bands of reflected light echo the rhythm of the tide and the distant horizon. Where Calm Begins explores the quiet moment when the horizon invites us to slow down and reconnect with ourselves. Layers of soft cerulean, turquoise and violet-blue are balanced with delicate blush pinks, pale lavender and subtle touches of warm cream, suggesting the gentle light of dawn or dusk reflected across still water. Working with oil and cold wax, I have built the surface through successive layers, creating a rich texture that catches the light and echoes the quiet rhythm of the sea.
The sweeping horizontal bands encourage the eye to drift gently across the painting, offering a sense of spaciousness and ease. Rather than depicting a specific place, the work reflects an emotional landscape—one where the horizon becomes an anchor and where feelings of calm, balance and quiet joy begin to emerge.

The Quiet Pull explores the gentle attraction of the horizon—its quiet ability to draw us into a place of stillness, reflection, and emotional calm. Layers of soft blues, muted teals, lavender greys, and warm coral, blush pink and golden light are built through successive applications of oil and cold wax, creating a rich, tactile surface that echoes the movement of light across the sea. The horizontal bands of colour encourage the eye to drift slowly through the painting, inviting a moment of pause and quiet contemplation. Rather than demanding attention, the work offers a gentle invitation to slow down and reconnect with the restorative power of nature.
